Why La Romana & Bayahibe
The southeast is the Dominican Republic's refined, relaxed corner. La Romana is best known for Casa de Campo — a legendary luxury resort since the 1970s, with one of the Caribbean's most famous golf courses, a marina and the clifftop artisan village of Altos de Chavón. Just down the coast, Bayahibe is a small fishing village turned easygoing beach base, with calm, swimmable water.
Compared with Punta Cana about an hour east, the area is quieter, more upscale and better positioned for the country's signature island excursions. Whether you want luxury and golf, a calm family beach, or a Saona-focused trip, Lisa matches the right resort and plan.
The area: Casa de Campo, Bayahibe & beyond
Where you stay shapes the trip:
- Casa de Campo — the vast luxury resort: championship golf (Teeth of the Dog), a marina, fine dining, villas and Altos de Chavón; the area's flagship.
- Bayahibe — the laid-back village and beach (Playa Dominicus nearby), with calm swimmable water and the Saona/Catalina excursion piers.
- Dominicus — the resort beach area beside Bayahibe, with several all-inclusives.
- Altos de Chavón — a recreated Mediterranean village above the Chavón river, with galleries, an amphitheatre and views.
Saona & Catalina islands
The southeast is the base for the DR's two most famous island day trips:
- Saona Island — the country's signature excursion: speedboat and catamaran to natural pools, snorkelling, a beach lunch and classic palm-and-sand scenery.
- Catalina Island — a smaller island known for excellent diving and snorkelling on its wall and reef.
- Bayahibe pier — the launch point for both; tours run most days.
Best time to visit
December to April is the dry-season sweet spot — warm, sunny and calm, with December to March the peak. Summer and fall are hotter and wetter, with hurricane season from June to November (travel insurance matters most then). Bayahibe's calm, south-facing beaches are pleasant year-round, and the island trips run best in the calmer dry months.
Who it's for & what it costs
The area suits luxury and golf travellers (Casa de Campo), couples wanting calm and refinement, and families who'll love Bayahibe's gentle beaches and the Saona trip. Costs span from value all-inclusives at Dominicus to ultra-luxury at Casa de Campo; a one-week package ranges accordingly. Lisa finds the right fit and the perks that improve the value.
Getting there and mistakes to avoid
La Romana's own airport (LRM) makes access easy; some travellers fly into Punta Cana (PUJ) and transfer about an hour. Lisa arranges it. Avoid these missteps:
- Expecting Punta Cana's nightlife and endless resort strip — the southeast is calmer.
- Booking without checking beach vs golf vs island-trip priorities.
- Missing the Saona day trip — it's the area's signature.
- Booking the cheapest room without checking location.
- Skipping travel insurance in hurricane season (June–November).
